History of Maine American Legion Baseball
Maine American Legion Baseball began in 1928, with Alfred Post 134 crowned as the first state champion. The program flourished after World War II, expanding to dozens of teams across the state. Notable programs include Gardiner Post 4 (1969), Portland Post 17 (1983, 1995, 1999, 2004), and Acadians Post 207 of Ellsworth, which reached the American Legion World Series in 2023. Portland secured Maine’s only national title in 2004 with a 2-0 win over Kennewick (Wash.) Post 34—highlighted by Mike Powers’ one-hit, eight-inning gem and Ryan Reid striking out the side for the save. Notable alumni include Bill Swift, the 1993 American Legion Baseball Graduate of the Year.
Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025, American Legion Baseball continues to foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and community among players ages 13 to 19.
